I've been to several banks and I'm sure if I mentioned them here as a negative someone would have the opposite opinion. I've been at this branch prior to it becoming FMB. I've found the staff eager to help. The two Carolyns are the best. I opened a small business account and I read all that they can and won't do for my account. So it was no surprise to me when a customer bounced a check on me that I would be responsible. Tried all that I could to collect on the bad debt and unfortunately had to temporarily cancel my account. But I am back with them again. It was not the banks fault. It was the client.

My elderly father in law has had an account here for several years, but when his debit/credit/ATM card was reported lost/stolen, they mailed him a new card, but failed to tell him that they enrolled him in Overdraft Protection, which he never wanted. A few months later, he was low on funds and did not realize it since in the past his transactions would be denied if there weren't sufficient funds, but this time the transactions went through. 11 in all totaling less than $100. 3 days later he received a letter stating that his account is overdrawn and that he is being charged $35 per transaction (even if it was only for $1.85). He immediately stopped using the card, but in the past 3 days had used it 11 times. They charged him a total of $385 for the transactions. I called Card member services for First Merchant and they said only the branch manager can authorize a refund for any fees I went into the branch on 1250 N Emerson w/ him and explained to the assistant manager who referred me to the manager who I explained everything to, so she said that she would get back to us. She ended up taking off 3 of the 11 charges so he was only charged $280 for their mistake. I realize that he should have kept better track of his account balance, but they even told me they could tell something must have changed on his account because they could see the previous rejected transactions before he got the new card. On top of that, I took a look at his monthly statement and he was also being charged $5 for a paper version of his monthly statement. To give you an idea of this banks mentality, they sent us another letter last week that the $35 fee is now going up to $37 starting in August (as if $35 per transaction to let someone borrow a couple of dollars for a few days isn't high enough). He ended up closing his account. I know other banks (I won't name them here) give you free checking if you do direct deposit.
